For a brief time, there was a spot on TV where you could find David Sanborn, Daniel Lanois, the Indigo Girls, Sonic Youth and Marc Ribot on the same bill. Or Carla Bley, Allen Toussaint, Bootsy Collins, Karen Mantler and Pretty Fat. Or Conway Twitty, Sun Ra, the Kronos Quartet and The Residents.

It was Night Music, a wide-ranging musical show produced by Lorne Michaels and its brief two-seasons were a smorgasbord of offerings. It was a glimpse into how our as-yet-unforeseen digital age was going to democratize music and foster a panorama of exposure for average fans and artists.
